Conserving Georgia’s Forests

We believe that recognition of the multifunctionality of forest ecosystems is the key for their long-term conservation and sustainable use in Georgia, nearly 40% of which is covered with diverse and often unique forest habitats. NACRES promotes the many ecosystem services Georgia’s forests provide to society, with a focus on non-timber forest resources and nature-based tourism. We also assist the authorities in combating the increasing risks of wildfires through computer modelling, while also taking into account the inevitable impacts of climate change.

Within our Forest Programme we:

  • Encourage sustainable use of non-timber forest resources
  • Promote nature–based sustainable tourism with strong emphasis on local participation and community benefits
  • Conduct studies on forest fires through detailed surveys and mapping for modelling of wildfire risks in cooperation with our international partners
